HOME OPENER FOR BUCKS TUESDAY US Open Cup Spot At Stake In Berkley
After two impressive road wins to open the 2004 soccer season, the Michigan Bucks face Great Lakes Division rival Fort Wayne at Hurley Field in Berkley on Tuesday night (7:30pm). The Fever (1-0) enters its second season after a third place finish last season, missing the Premier Development League (PDL) playoffs by one game. The match will count as both a league game and as a US Open Cup qualifier, with the losing team likely eliminated from the country's oldest, and most prestigious, soccer tournament. "With 17 teams vying for only two spots from the Central Conference (Great Lakes and Heartland Divisions), you likely need to win your first four games," said Bucks second-year coach, Don Gemmell. "Fort Wayne is a tough team with a great coach, so it should be pretty intense on Tuesday." The Bucks wrap-up Cup qualifying on Sunday at Hurley vs. the expansion Cleveland Internationals (1-1) at 6:30pm.
Gemmell has received outstanding effort from a number of players already this season, including University of Michigan teammates Knox Cameron (four goals), defender Kevin Taylor and Mychal Turpin (one goal and three assists), newcomer Joseph Kabwe (one goal and two assists) from Zimbabwe via Lindsey Wilson College (KY), Stephan David (Lindsey Wilson), Erik Nelson (Dearborn) and Stephen Armstrong, a former Buck who was recently released by Kansas City of Major League Soccer (MLS).
"We have most of our players back from last season and, with the addition of players like Armstrong, Kabwe and Mario Gomez (Rochester), we feel like this could be an outstanding team," said Gemmell. Returnees John Minagawa-Webster (Monroe/Michigan State University), Nate Norman (Rochester), Ryan Rzepka (Novi/Oakland University), Simon Omekanda (Rochester), Brian Ombigi (Lindsey Wilson) and Nate Craft (Royal Oak), plus goalkeepers Jeff Wiese (Oakland University) and Peter Dzubay (University of Michigan) have also all made early contributions to the 2-0 start. Tickets will be available at the gate for $9 ($5 for fans under 19 years old).
BUCKS SEASON 4-PASS The Season 4-Pass allows admission for up to 4 people (adult or kid) into each regular season home game ($324 value) for just $115 (less than $30 per season ticket) and will be available at the gate.
