The Mid Michigan Bucks minor league soccer team opened the 2003 Premier Development League (PDL) campaign with a 2-1 victory over the Ft. Wayne Fever (1-2) in Saginaw, MI. The Bucks go for their second US Open Cup Qualifying win tomorrow night at Berkley's Hurley Field (7:30pm) against the expansion Toledo Slayers. Knox Cameron scored first for the Bucks on a play set-up by Jordan Gruber in the game's 12th minute. 10 minutes later, Cameron received a ball from Mychal Turpin and gave it back to Turpin, who was cutting through the 18-yard area and one-timed his shot past Fever goalkeeper, Ben Stevens. Phil Presser of the Fever countered with a breakaway goal following a failed off-sides trap that left the Bucks flat. Bucks' keeper Jeff Wiese collected his first victory as a Buck, making four saves.
Don Gemmell made Bucks history as the first coach to win his inaugural game with the franchise. "I was pleased with the effort, but we need to finish our chances better. After the first half, I thought we would to come out and score more goals," said Gemmell. The Bucks dominated play for the first 45 minutes and out-shot Ft. Wayne 6-2 in the half. "But the Fever came out and played a lot better. Overall, I was pleased - we'll take the victory."
