Bucks Hire Dario Brose To Coach (PHOTO ATTACHED) Former MLS All-Star and MLS Cup Champion to Lead Team in 2002
The Mid Michigan Bucks minor league soccer team searched the country for a coach, but ended up finding him in their own (new) backyard. Former Major League Soccer (MLS) star Dario Brose, 32, retired after last season's MLS Cup Championship with the San Jose Earthquakes and took a "real" job in Canton, Michigan. While an important part of the Earthquakes, he sat out almost the entire season with a series of serious injuries. "We have actually been talking with Dario for several months, originally to try and get him to come out of retirement," said Bucks co-owner, Dan Duggan. "When it became clear he was done playing, we pursued him for the coaching job. We believe he will bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to our young players."
Brose cited his good fortune, "I get to stay in the game that has given so much to me, coach for the best team around and my family gets to live in an area we love. Plus, we are so close to Dennis and his family." Dario's brother, former Bucks and Detroit Rockers star Dennis Brose, also lives in Canton. Dario Brose was hired in 2001 as an executive research consultant for the Livonia Executive Research firm, Qualigence. He and his wife, Brenna, have two young sons, Declan and Zarec. "It is a huge time commitment, but I am sure that it will be worth it," said Brose.
The Hughsonville, NY native's playing career has taken him from North Carolina State (three-time All-American) to the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona and on to play professionally in three countries. Starting with St. Brieuc in the French Second Division during the 1992 season, Brose moved on in 1994 to the German Third Division powerhouse, FC Saarbrucken, where he stayed for four years. From 1992 through 1996, he was also called up five times for duty with the U.S. Men's National Team. Longing to be a part of what was now happening in America with MLS, Brose agreed to a huge pay cut to come home and play for the San Jose Earthquakes from 1999 to 2001. He was named to the MLS All-Star team in 2000 and got his Championship ring last season, though he missed almost the entire season with injuries.
"Last season was really tough," Brose said in an understatement. In a twelve-month period, he experienced two knee surgeries, a hip-flexer injury and two stress fractures in his feet. "I wish I could have been more of a contributor on the field, but I really gained a lot watching Frank Yallop coach. I hope I can emulate his style: Work hard, have intense practices, but still have fun. We will probably do more 8 v 8 training than ODP drills." This year's Bucks team will be young, but talented. "I expect 25 guys pushing each other at every practice with egos checked at the door. From what I hear about the guys we have signed so far, these are all good kids who work hard. I can't wait to get started," said Brose. The Bucks begin training on May 2nd, with the first game at Indiana (South Bend) on May 11th. Mid Michigan's home opener is on May 18th at Birmingham Seaholm High School against the Chicago Fire Reserves at 7:30pm.
